Yup, she’s dead
I find this series a bit disappointing so far. I haven’t even read the manga or VN, but I feel they’re going too fast. At least in Higurashi, they gave a very creepy atmosphere then have Keiichi kill Mion and Rena in episode 4.*sigh* I should really stop comparing Umineko and Higurashi or I’ll keep being disappointed.
On the brighter side of things, Maria gets some love from me :]

Aw…isn’t that cute?

O.O

I order you to marry me, but I’m giving the choice of accepting my proposal.
Seriously, what the heck? Those two being together came out of the blew for me. There was barely any development on them, so Shanon’s death really didn’t leave much of an impact on me.
Plus, the dead bodies were censored –___–
Well that’s all I have to say for the episode.

George ordered Shanon to accept the ring, otherwise the modest girl wouldn’t even accept his gift. But the choice to wear the ring was entirely hers.
I agree that the anime adaptation is really rushed. They covered 8 chapters of manga material in just two episodes. O_o
I love Maria, too! ^w^ And I’ve also never read the manga or the VN, but I’m liking this, maybe because I don’t have Higurashi to compare it to.
Also, I felt so sad when Shannon died; just knowing that she was in love and he loved her back was enough for me to feel bad (not to mention the fact she was wearing the ring, so they would have been married otherwise… 3=).
(And they had to censor the violence; remember how much crap Higurashi got after that murder in Japan? That’s why Rei was an OVA.)
