I can see a shitstorm coming

Sheep can be awesome too. Artwork by かにかま , see 'Further reading'

Sheep can be awesome too. Artwork by かにかま , see ‘Further reading’

And oh wait! it’s already here. Cows, or in our case sheep are flying around, thunder’s thundering and bolts are bolting. This time the subject is the Otaku Elimination project, a hater blog taking the different use of the term ‘otaku’ in Japan and in the West as an excuse to troll. For them it’s clearly not clear that the overusing and self-proclaiming of ‘otaku’ in the West was caused by nothing else than Lucky Star. Everybody wanted to be as cool as Konata, it’s simple as that. But since it’s only an excuse, let’s forget about that.

As clearly as that is also they that will be definitely content with what happens around. I mean, their keikaku works! Everybody is wtf’ing, lol’ing and similar at them, but hey, they are linked to in all this storm. They are the eye of the storm, and according to my own stats, with that many visitors coming from there they must have an amazing amount of daily pageviews!

But what can be their purpose? Is it as they state, to clear the blogosphere from ‘bad’ material? What happened to freedom of speech of the last free medium, the internet? If you don’t like a blog, don’t visit it. But what could it be then? They are anonimous. So they don’t have anything off their newly-baked fame. I couldn’t exactly imagine someone to want as many people as possible to see how they are letting their steam out either, so I’m really intrigued.

Now to their methods. They are cheap. There are just a few arguments they have: using of the word ‘otaku’, doing similar to others things, and being like Danny Choo. Excuse me! Danny Choo is kind of a successful man, ne? And even if I’m for originality, there’s nothing bad at walking familiar footpaths if you don’t go too far. The same goes for the ‘similarities.’ People blog because they want to state their own opinion on something. If there is an episode people want to talk about, expect many similar posts to appear, because many people have similar opinions! That doesn’t mean that they look up. As for ‘otaku’, I already said what I think. Who cares, besides you, ‘eliminators’?

You may think, they didn’t troll us at A² because we passed. That’s wrong. They not only called us odd, they also called us uninteresting, and passed us only because we didn’t match the above arguments. So not because we appeared good to them, but because I’m too lazy to do proper episodics and instead talk on random moments when they come or let myself slide down the meta stream. And because I visit many webdesign-o-sphere blogs and have seen somewhere the use of ‘addict’ towards a hobby, thus described us as ‘anime-addicts’. That’s troll enough for me, to have passed like that.

For others though, as 7-san pointed me at, it worked as an attention-grabber. According to 7, if they eliminated all blogs, nobody would continue to visit them, but because they passed somebody, people will want to know who passes else in the future. Nice tactic. You are good guys, in the meaning of good-at.

Oh, and let’s not forget that they have special, magic-like abilities:

We’re kind. We toyed with the idea of actually removing the blogs ourselves at first, but we wanted an even battlefield and that the best way to prevent the problem from happening again would be to make an example of and simply ridicule (or maybe praise) every anime related blog.

So they can remove others’ blogs, ne? Either it’s Yokuwakaru Gendaimahou or DDOS. And wait, it’s not all. They have Meidocafe.jp in their list. So they can summon the dead too. I wonder how, but in case of Meidocafe.jp I would be only happy about its revival, should it happen.

They’re scrubs. The only thing scrubs can do is be disliked by others. They sure as hell can’t get ‘no love from me.

By the way, fix your bloody buttons. Black text with a dark background = can’t see it.

I dunno. Try refreshing the page with ctrl+shift+r or something, because I lightened the buttons up by about 5 levels.

I think it’s funny that they called you a “weird” blog, as though blogs are supposed to fit one pattern, and then slammed the other blogs for being too similar to each other/Danny Choo.

The blogsphere is going to be a hell of an interesting place over the next month or so. I personally can’t wait to see this inevitable shitstorm. And if any blogs improve even a little bit through this battle royale of anime blogs then that’s a delightful bonus.

Your points are completely valid mind you. But I think the most important thing is that they are actually naming blogs rather than the grand sweeping statements that don’t actually achieve anything *cough* Colony Drop *cough*. Now that they have the attention of everyone, maybe they’ll stop flaming for flaming sake and maybe start some genuine critique. Or maybe I’m placing too much faith in the anonymous of the internet…

(I also feel a teeny bit guilty for bringing the site to peoples attention…but someone was going to do it eventually I guess)

Don’t worry, the shitstorm was unevitable and foreseeable. I also think you may make something more of them than they are, but I can be wrong too. The time will show.

Though under the pressure of trolling, perhaps some blogs will change… Not that I would know blogs I would think needed to change anyway. But let’s assume there are.

We’ll see eventually I guess. If they go down the road of pointless flaming then people will stop paying attention to them.

    • Posted November 8, 2009 at 20:07 | Permalink

Why should the blogs have to change? If you don’t like a blog, don’t read it. Though it is sad that so many popular blogs are so…dull? Because every reader wants their mind numbed!

I’m not so sure this is going to do anything to the blogs featured, especially as everyone is just laughing this Game off anyway.

Honestly, I don’t give a damn about what they say; this is just how the internet is to me. Whatever one says is ones own opinion. In fact, I just find their post humorous (don’t mind me; I just think like that).

We definitely have the option of throwing more wood to the bonfire or just allowing it to cool down and die.

Blatantly put, I’m not going to be involved in bitching at them and if they talk shit about my blog, let them be; I’m not going to respond to them. But they’re still scrubs. Lots of bloggers are scrubs to me though. I barely ever name them unless the time is right.

The buttons, they were just a lot darker earlier.

I juz love the way that they are approaching blogs. Heck, they even take the term “otaku” to the eastern interpretation and pass judgment on those who are deem unworthy!

Oh well, shitstorm as it may be, but they are generating interests slowly. It’s cheap, but it works for them…and for you as well!

p/s: I still feel appreciative that mine was mentioned first. Feels like an honor, you know. ^^

Ahaha, I am back…but just not into blogging yet. Looks like I’m not cut out for it but I still visit all my friends’ blogs and read through interesting. Ah, and the criticism didn’t made me stop though lol

  7. Posted November 8, 2009 at 19:43 | Permalink

Well, there are a few that could use to be more interesting. I know that at any given time, each page on AnimeNano yields maybe 2–3 interesting articles for me to check out. That’s an absurdly low amount and if we can even double that, I’d be a happier person.

    • Gargron 459
      Posted November 8, 2009 at 19:48 | Permalink

That’s a matter of AnimeNano then, or such pools in general. Yes indeed, if I were to look at AnimeNano I would only find myself going through pages clicking only at less than 20% of posts. But the blogosphere I browse on my own is what I was talking about when I said I wouldn’t know an improvement-needing blog.

They might just be simple haters, but you got to hand it to them for being able to generate so much buzz. If they ever get popular I’m guessing more blog-bashing blogs will spring up to serve as competition lol.

  9. Posted November 8, 2009 at 20:40 | Permalink

This whole thing is just going to disappear like every other multi-blog project or drama (often one influences the other) that’s been out there. If the people paying attention to it don’t get bored, they will eventually.

So I think it’s fine to give them attention like this since it’s impossible for them to hold onto that attention forever. Or they could just easily get bored themselves and leave with a dramatic “You’re all too horrible for us to continue” post. This is the internet! If they’re the expert judges they act like, they know they won’t last.

I give them about about 2–3 months. If they go beyond that, their dedication to trolling deserves some praise. Or just ridicule considering all the better things they could be doing. :/ I’m enjoying the whole thing a bit since it’s been a while since we’ve seen blogging drama at any level.

They should just stick to watching Kanamemo, really. Don’t they realize that anime blogging is very marginalized and that most blog visitors are looking for very specific things to read, so they don’t actually care on the blogosphere or blogs, for that matter, as a whole. Very few people do, and most of them are bloggers themselves. It’s the same thing as with fansub quality, only fansubbers truly care about it, the vast majority just grabs what’s offered. So obviously these guys are bloggers with some serious issues. Also, I don’t believe that they are as serious of otaku as they claim to be. The group factor is also something to consider. Ever interacted with other otaku in real life? Especially if there were 5 or 6 of them? Assuming they know each other IRL, they would have to practice moderation and would not take up a project like this, otherwise they are one screwed up group of individuals, or the group doesn’t actually exist and that there’s only one very screwed up guy. They throw words like credibility around, do they even know what it means, and have they demonstrated to have any at all? You start by revealing your identity and your profession.

Sure, I can agree that the majority of blogs out there are Danny Choo wannabes who have no idea what means to be unique, but this is just a bad way to go about ‘purging’ the otaku blogosphere. I’m sure most people know an uninteresting blog when they see one, then again they are looking for very specific things, things they might actually not. So it’s all arbitrary and all very laughable. Not that they tried their hand at constructive criticism, I beg your pardon. In any case, to just come out and admit that is just a very bad excuse for poor content. Maybe they should make their list themselves.
