GRSI, the ultimate guide into

It’s funny in a sad way that posts are more discussed in Google Reader than in their own comment sections nowadays, but I find myself hanging out there longer and longer everyday and I honestly enjoy the conversations going on there. But it isn’t too easy to set it up all working, and there are many things you can’t know if somebody won’t tell you. Thus this guide. I’ll go from the step of opening GR the first time, so who already uses Google Reader as their default feed reader may skip to step 3.

1. You need a Google account.

If you haven’t one, create yours here. Everybody has a Google account nowadays.

2. Open Google Reader.

Subscribe to some feeds if it’s your first time, an empty feedreader makes feel ronery.

3. Open ‘Sharing Settings’

  • Change visibility to ‘Public’
  • Mark all groups as checked

4. Follow people

Finding people on GR from scratch is not easy at all. You have to know their e-mail address at the very least. I can point to some people who dominate my stream, as ‘basic equipment’:

Now, to ‘follow’ them, do the following (for each):

  1. Open the link
  2. After the page loads, a box with the headline ‘These items are being shared in Google Reader’ will appear
  3. Click on the ‘Follow’ button in that box

5. Open ‘Sharing Settings’ (again)

  1. Click on ‘You are following [number] people’
  2. In the appeared list, click on ‘Add to a group’
  3. Click on ‘Add to Friends’
  4. Do this with every person in the list

6. You are ready to go!

Try sharing items from the feeds you are subscribed to (at the bottom of each entry, there is a link ‘Share with note’ — that’s the way to go) and commenting on shares by others.

List of anibloggers in GRSI

I will update it as I will find more people (whose profiles are public).

Also, to be publically-accessable like that, you need to create your Public Google Profile and ‘Add a link to your shared items on your Google Profile’ in ‘Sharing Settings’.

Hmm, the prompt to add you was in German. You would think that would be based off of the viewer (my) settings rather than your settings.

People keep linking me to non-anime related articles on GRSI. This does not please me
