Dear Diary,
Forgive me for neglecting you. I’ve had some (un)eventful days. Nevertheless, I shall tell you what I think of what’s going on.
The First Sob Story
We all went to the guild, and what do you know? Tenshi happens to find out about it. This should have happened a long time ago, but let’s ignore that. So we go Indiana Jones/James Bond style when trying to reach the guild. Somehow I, the male lead, made it through every obstacle with Yuri, the female lead. Totally unexpected.
Then I get to hear her sob story. Once when she was a little girl, dudes came into her house (how the hell did they get in?) and threatened to kill her siblings if she didn’t give them some valuables. They send her out to go find something around the house, all alone. In this time, she could have called the police. From what she told me, Yuri just ran around the house looking for something to give them. All her siblings ended up dying, and then the police suddenly came! (Who called them? These little details…) Of course, I have a new found respect for her and see her as my potential love interest.
We finally go to the guild, which we end up having them blow up. Yuri tells them to blow the place up to protect it from Tenshi. She then goes to fight off Tenshi. I helped-ish.
Music Is Damn Important to Some People
We decided to hack Tenshi’s computer (which we should have done long ago). To keep Tenshi and the NPC away, we had our band distract them with pretty awesome songs. I also learned a bit about Iwasawa.
Her sob story begins with her parents arguing. To escape from it, she turned to music. She devoted the rest of her life to music until she happens to suffer from aphasia due to her parents fights. Well…that really sucks.
We learned Tenshi doesn’t get her powers from god, so she isn’t working for him. She develops her powers herself. This brings up the question about her past, but to keep the story going, we’ll reveal that much later.
Iwasawa’s performance is interrupted by Tenshi, and she gave one last song before disappearing.
Everyone’s An Idiot, Didn’t You Know?
Baseball. Somehow, this will bring us closer to defeating Tenshi (?) and all. Hinata, who I think may have a thing for me, decided to recruit people for our team. Unfortunately, we were left with all the idiots. I’ve seen many sides of idiocy now. There is “Yui-nyan ♥” stupid, Shiina & Broom stupid, and Fujimaki stupid.
After we displayed our pretty good baseball skills, Hinata kept zoning out and ended up reliving his traumatic event that cause him to get into drugs and later die. If Hinata caught that ball, it would be goodbye to him. At that moment, I realized that I’d be kinda upset to see him go. Yui stopped him from curing his PTSD though, so it’s all good.

Overall Thoughts
Angel Beats really loves to set a “serious moment” and then kill it for laughs. They’ll even play the music for it. Not sure what the exact term for this is called though. Want to link me a TVtropes page for this?
Call me heartless, but I didn’t feel much for Yuri during her whole sob story. It’s like “look at my past! Isn’t it sad? Feel bad for me” and all to me. Iwasawa’s was better. Predictable, but hey, aren’t most characters pasts like that? She seemed more real than Yuri. That’s why I didn’t poke fun at her past. For Hinata, I had thought he died because the ball hit in him the face. I was waiting for that to happen. Turns out he just missed the ball and got into drugs. Drugs are bad, kiddies. They can kill you. I do like Hinata though and I’m glad to see he’ll still be around. He reminds me of Sunohara from Clannad with a bit of Koizumi from his “gay” comments.
Thoughts on Yui? She’s cute, too cute. I don’t blame Hinata for being annoyed with her. I am too. Well, I felt this way about Makoto and Fuko before. Maybe I’ll warm up to her?
No real opinion on the new opening and ending. I do prefer the previous ones, but the way they added it in was pretty nice.
Also, I have decided my favorite character is TK. He needs more screen time.
Angel Beats is entertaining me, but that’s all its doing. Hopefully it gets better.

Yeah, the “serious” moments in Angel Beats aren’t that effective, at least not for me. Sudden transitions between slapstick and tragic history doesn’t quite work.

The shiftiness of the tone is definitely a problem imo. It’s very hard to get sympathetic with no space from serious to comic relief. So weird.

If it’s really like that for you on Yuri’s past, than I hope you also considered that it’s not pity she’s looking for. If she was, then she wouldn’t be leader, much less fighting against God determinedly in the afterlife. Moreover, I don’t think this battle front is a place to sympathize on what went wrong in their previous lives but to clear away any regrets that are keeping them attached to it. So while I do think some of their backstories are sad, it’s not so depressing since it’s almost like they’ve been given a second chance to do things over before really moving on.
I’m not trying to change your opinion but would just like to examine it from a different angle.
I understand she’s not looking for pity. Yuri shows she is very independent and strong girl. I just hoped to be able to sympathize with her as she’s the main heroine. After watching her past, I felt very little besides “well, that sucks for her.” Eh. She hasn’t warmed up to me yet. Maybe it’s because we’ve only had one episode that focused on her so far.
Thanks for sharing your view
That’s an interesting suggestion. It is becoming apparent that after they move on and rid themselves of their past regrets, they disappear. It’s nice to look at it as a second chance
